Fitness Resolutions: Just Say “NO”

It’s that time of year – the time to make your resolution to change your life forever. Yep, this is the year you are going to finally shed that weight. Gimmie a break! According to the University of Scranton’s Journal of Clinical Psychology only about 8% of people are successful in keeping their resolutions. FYI, the number one resolution that people select is to “lose weight.” My advice…just say “NO.”
You don’t need another empty promise or false hope; you need a real goal with a results-driven plan and a way to stay accountable. Okay let’s do this. Here are six steps to make real improvement.
Step 1: Figure out where you are. Take a look in the mirror and do an honest assessment of where you are physically, mentally, etc. You cannot chart a path forward if you don’t know where you stand.

Step 2: Figure out where you want to go. Be clear and specific with this one. Do you want to see a particular number on the scale? Do you want to fit into a certain dress size? Do you want to complete a certain Spartan Race? Figure it out and know WHY you want it. Then, write it down.

Step 3: Make a plan. This should be specific and realistic. How are you going to achieve your goal? What are the steps?

Step 4: Get help. No need to do this alone. Get a buddy to commit with you so you can push each other through the rough patches. A friend can help cut down on missed workouts, etc. Get a coach, mentor, or trainer. You’re worth it. Expert guidance and accountability are a winning combination.

Step 5: Execute. Publicly announce your goal and take action! Be consistent because you can’t rely on pure motivation to get you through. Track your progress and work your butt off.

Step 6: Have fun! Life goes by in the blink of an eye – enjoy it! Celebrate the little things and be grateful. You are putting in a ton of effort so you might as well have fun too.

So the next time some asks you if you’ve made a “resolution” you can just say “NO. I have a real goal with an actionable plan and I’m 100% confident that I will achieve it.”
